Software Development West 05 Conference
Precision Quality Software staff attended and presented at the SD West 05 conference in Santa Clara, the week of March 14th through March 18th, 2005. It was a productive and enjoyable week. With very few exceptions, the
speakers and tutorials were superb. We learned a lot, saw some old friends and made some new

This subset of our Web site describes some of the highlights, including our favorite speakers,
information on the case study at which Precision Quality Software (PQS) co-presented, and an interesting story about how PQS ended up in the cartoon-publishing business. The intended reader audience includes developers and requirements engineers who did not attend the conference and are curious about what they may have missed, possibly with a view to attending SD West 06.
You may have heard it said that the productivity differential between the least and the most productive
professional developers is a factor of ten or more. Having worked with some very poor and some very
good professional developers, we are inclined to believe that the number is higher than “ten.” Attending
a conference such as SD West 05 is all part of moving a professional developer up the productivity
scale, at a cost that’s likely to be far less than the resultant benefits in morale and productivity.

SD West 05 was presented by CMP Media, and their team was highly efficient at managing the myriad of
issues that underlie a successful conference. No doubt, planning and operating the conference entailed a lot
of hard work, but the organizers were always cheerful and helpful in spite of whatever issues they were
We’re already looking forward to attending SD West 06, as well as SD Best Practices 05 (informally
referred to as SD East) in Boston in September.
